Hero? It’s not as grandiose as it sounds. It probably is as earnest and smarmy as it sounds, though. In short, teaching is an inherently heroic profession. It’s a refusal to partake in an unexamined status quo in favor of building a better future. It’s a principled stand against demagoguery, xenophobia, fascism, etc. On some days more than others, it’s the work of superheroes. It’s also work. Professional work and not some divine vocation.
